Alameda historian and journalist Rasheed Shabazz presents a history of Black migrations to Alameda during the 20th century. Black migration transformed the shape and population of Alameda. Early Black migrants came from throughout the diaspora, including Mexico and the Caribbean. During and aftwr World War II, the population exploded, only to be intentionally reduced through destruction of public housing. Due to housing policies, the Black population has been excluded, segregated, and displaced.
